Retain your People References!

Coda has a powerful @-reference system, that lets you reference (and link to) people, pages, subpages, tables and rows throughout your docーand in comments. Notion has a similar paradigm, so if you’ve mentioned people throughout a Notion doc or template, you probably want to hang on to those references when you import to Coda.

🚧 While Coda offers a “Notion Import” option in their new doc creation flow, I DO NOT recommend this option if you have people references in your Notion data, since Coda might not have awareness of those collaborators just yet.

Instead, follow these steps:

Visit

coda.io⁠

, sign in and select ‘+ New Doc’

In the new doc creation flow, select ‘Blank’

Tip: If you already have a Coda account, you can type coda.new into Google Chrome to make a new, blank doc instead

From your blank doc, click the ‘Share’ button in the upper right corner

Share your Coda doc with any of your Notion collaborators

Note: You can connect Coda to Google Contacts to make it easier to find and complete the email addresses of your Notion collaborators

After you’ve shared your doc with everyone you’ve referenced, type /notion in your doc

Import your Notion contentーwhile retaining your people references!

Even after you’ve shared your doc and imported your Notion data (with people references!), you can continue to @-mention people in text, tables and comments. Hopefully your co-workers are as awesome as my dunder Mifflin co-workers. 😜

If you decide to import prior to sharing you’ll still have names in your doc, but they’ll only render as text (and not references).
