Background info

For 10 years, hundreds of people were arrested and charged with crimes they did not commit. Most were detained while protesting against social or environmental measures by the government of former President Rafael Correa. Judicial harassment became the most widely used way to silence protests.

During Rafael Correa's government, the most common reasons for indigenous protest were defense of the territory and rejection of mining and oil extraction.
